The untitled work began as a journal entry that I constantly updated with thoughts, knowledge, and whatever I was absorbing at the time. Once the canvas was filled with sharpie then came the acrylic to layer and cover the sharpie to the point where it hides in the back ground. According to Jean Michel Basquiat, "words mean more in their absence", so I used the technique of pentimento on most of my works to give the eye more to look at when admiring pieces such as this one. The more you begin to look at it the more you begin to discover things you didn't see before. The black figure in the painting is a soul most likely the embodiment of a brown person. The anatomical appearance of the figure reminds us that no matter what we look like at underneath the skin and flesh we are the same. The white background gives a feeling of whitewashing or censoring the facts, thoughts and feelings making the soul the heart of the piece, but leaves the viewer questioning if those words have any meaning.
This piece is enjoyed for its post modern aesthetic.
