My interpretation of the balinese world heritage site Pura Besakih, partly inspired by my own visit and impressions of Bali.
My view is of a dream like landscape inspired by the auras of freedom in water and the sky, whence the reason it looks like a temple part submerged and part mountainous.
Reducing the scene to expressive marks in ocean blue and turquoise hues, the most important element dominating the scene are the meru towers rising out of the thick haze, resembling misty peaks in keeping with the legend of Mount Meru, the sacred five peaked mountain of hindu and buddhist cosmology.
In stark contrast to the misty blues, the intense bursts on the roof tops where the sun has penetrated are almost gold leaf in intensity. The bird coming out of the thick cloud adds scale but is also the symbol of hope and grace, a fitting epitaph to the scene, and a holy greeting.
