    Description

The painting is part of the "Masters Remixed" series, in which old masters paintings are transfered to the digital world, where they get changed like a remix in the music world and then taken back to the analog stage. In this case, a still life painting by Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (in this case "Tulips, Rose, Carnations, Lily of the Valley, Forget-Me-Nots and Other Flowers in a Vase" from 1619 is enlarged from 28.5x19.5cm to 130x105cm. There´s also been a 1980's figure (Cringer from Mattel's Masters of the Universe) added. On the one hand, the interaction of the two positions creates tension, but on the other hand they harmonize very well with each other. The noble, timeless appearance of Bosschaert's composition also dominates the new work, but in combination with the action figure it looks young and fresh.

  • About this artist

    Concept

In his works, Reuys deals with current social and cultural issues and tries to influence thought patterns and break existing beliefs. He wants to make a contribution to the liberation from prudery and thought corsets, since in his eyes only spiritual freedom can really make people free.

In terms of composition, he mostly relies on a reduced and at the same time resonant visual language in his works. The stencil-like figures and flat, monochrome color backgrounds often look like a reminiscence of American Pop Art works of the 1960s and 1970s. Compared to typical representatives of this genre and time, however, Reuys usually deals with more serious topics such as religion, gender roles, politics or the abysses of the human psyche.

With his expressive representations, Reuys often turns to the viewer in a humorous way in order to attract their attention and to make them think and to deal more deeply with the serious themes of the works.

Reuys understands (his) art as an indicator for discussion and bases his work as an artist on Beuys' motto "... what is the point of art if nothing comes of it?" Instead of felt and fat, however – but in line with the endless flood of images and the fast pace of images in the online context - he relies on striking works in bright colors.
