Thematically, "In Utero" describes the perceptions of an unborn child in the womb, where it can already process and feel impressions such as sounds. Since any impressions are entirely new to the embryo, they are particularly intense. And it is precisely this sensory overload that Reuys transports to the canvas in In Utero and makes the sensations of the unborn child tangible for the viewer. The spectacular large format painting is a firework for the observing eye due to its intensive colours, its varied structure and the mixture of different techniques.
Also special about In Utero is the way it was produced. The work is not designed in such an uncoordinated manner as its appearance might at first lead the viewer to believe. For the production, acrylic paint was applied to small and medium-sized canvases, which were used as patterns to apply paint to the final canvas, nothing was poured or anything like that.
