“I am from Mercury” deals with the topic of loss. The woman in my painting is wearing a black dress as an expression of mourning. The scene could show her at or after a funeral, she is looking down and her facial expression shows sadness. I myself have been dealing with loss throughout my life. I lost my father with 16 when he left, I lost my mother to alcoholism and depression, and I lost my grandmother who was like a mother to me with to cancer. Also, the Corona Crisis had a psychological effect on most of us and since so many people died and are still dying every day from Covid, loss and mourning is a topic that should be addressed to. “I am from Mercury” stands for “I am sad”, “I lost someone” , “I am mourning”… acknowledging the loss and feelings that we all have. I feel that in our everyday life of work, daily household chores and tasks and adaptions we have to make, this acknowledgement and honest disclosure of our feelings we often have to bury in order to “function” is actually what we truly need.
