'West-Berlin '87' was painted 30 years after the German reunification and is a trip back in time. To the time of the Iron Curtain and counter culture, and West-Berlin being enclosed by Eastern Germany with its own raw energy, David Bowie, Iggy Pop (who lived and worked in West-Berlin - Heroes was written there) and Christiane F., inspired by now-old fashioned, layered and torn poster billboards that have seen the times come and go. The artists come from both the West and the East, once divided by the Berlin Wall, and formed a successful creative friendship in 2014.
This painting is a collaboration of artists Doris Reske (born in Western Germany) and Cathrin Gressieker (born in Eastern Germany). In our experimental and intuitive CoLab painting process we paint on large canvases, take turns and the layering can take up to a couple of months until a finished piece emerges and takes form.
