The ancient Egyptians kept a large number of domestic and wild animals at home. Among them were dogs, lions, baboons, monkeys, leopards, ibises, and, of course, cats. It was believed that animals were the embodiment of the gods. Pets were very important to Egyptian families and were often mummified after their death.
