As I started painting this, I started to reflect on the global situation of the 1980s... Specifically within East Germany.
I think about the mental conflict that the population was in at the time.
On one hand, You hear the innovations of your Western neighbors... the rumors of Former Countrymen, separated by a wall.
And that specifically, is what truly inspires this painting. Though it is only across the wall, It might as well have been a world away.
Even though it's been decades since your whole family have been together, You constantly wonder what they are doing beyond that wall... What kind of music are they listening to?
You can only hear faint sounds... but what you can hear, is very enticing.
It is still a mystery to you what lies Beyond the Iron Curtain... But you know it is only a matter of time before you find out for yourself.
