"Building Blocks" is a painting about separation. Separation from yourself, from your environment, to isolate what it is that you need next. Basic, yet complex, the imperfections and roughness allow for Building Blocks to remain raw and calculated.
This is a painting done mostly with rugged brush strokes as well as a palette knife in various slashing motions. With the black border off-centre, it directs the focus to the coloured majority of the canvas, which features an isolated stroke of black. This represents falling into a hole, experiencing a journey that is everything at once. The shapes on the right side are to say that though these feelings and experiences are complex, it can also be simplified by a matter of perspective. These are intentionally not painted to be perfect shapes, maintaining the necessary rawness.
