Buying Eggs is a painting heavily inspired by the legendary Jean-Michel Basquiat. Over the course of half a year, I studied movies, articles, books, and paintings connected to Basquiat. Jean's attention to form and color distribution- as well as his subliminally artistic messages- are the focuses of this piece. This is an homage, taking my own approach to his unique art style.
In order to correctly portray an original piece in Basquiat's style, I had to think like Basquiat. For a man who has no formal training, he taught himself art by "looking at a lot of things". This is what makes the painting different from my previous works. It is a piece that took a long time to make because of how critical you have to be when you add colour. At the same time, you have to paint without much thought. Putting yourself into this mindset for painting is both beautiful and chaotic. It results in adding until there becomes a sense of balance, with too much of anything, you lose that.
