In creating this piece, I aimed to capture the vibrant essence of confidence and poise. With expressive acrylics and impactful sprays, I fused expressionism's intensity with pop art vibrancy, while dancing on the edges of semi-abstraction. This artwork, a symphony of bold colours and an evocative figure, invites a dynamic energy into any space, encouraging viewers to embrace their own strength and elegance. “Just as cool as you please” refers to a line in the poem “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou. The poem illustrates just how stunning and alluring confidence is. Angelou writes that she is not “cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size,” but she keeps her head high and her stride strong because she knows she is a phenomenal woman. This is my hope and desire for every single woman I know - including the model that inspires this painting.

Concept

I’m interested in strong beautiful resilient women. These strong beautiful resilient women can be seen in my current body of work - standing in, emerging from, or swimming through, water. For me the most amazing thing about being underwater is that the rest of the world disappears for a while. There are no distractions or stress - just quietness.
The light is filtered and flickering, and beautiful reflections are created. The whole scene is blanketed in this cool, flowing, bubbly sensation. My models hair and clothing move with the water while they are suspended in the water - floating in a nurturing, freeing, and healing space. I like to give my viewers a sense of a magical but uplifted world.
On my personal journey this is a place where I want to be.
