    Description

This work was inspired by the mythological story of Argus, the Goddess Juno's faithful watchman. Parhelion first read it as a little boy, in Ovid's "Metamorphoses". Argus was a giant humanoid with 100 (literal or symbolic) eyes. After he was murdered by the God Mercury, Juno posthumously honoured Argus by placing his eyes in the peacock’s tail. Parhelion kept the title and colour scheme in the back of his mind for several years before actually painting the work over the course of Easter 2018 and he hopes it stirs in the viewer the same emotion of wistful nostalgia for lost eras that it does in him. Incidentally - there ARE a full 100 ‘eyes’ painted on the canvas!

    Concept

In his art, Parhelion aims to highlight the act of creation itself as the ultimate message; the method of communication is part of what is communicated. His Caribbean background reminds him at virtually all times that life is vibrant, riotous energy in constant motion. He expresses this dance of life in the play of raw colours in his work - it’s a spontaneous demonstration that creativity is the very antithesis of despair. Each artwork is an unrepeatable entelechial event expressing the essence of an idea, a concept, a notion, or an emotion. He’s not trying to capture the feeling and freeze it like a mounted butterfly with spikes through its wings. He wants instead to bring the painting to manifestation so he can give wings to the underlying idea or feeling, help it to fly free and find extra dimensions in which to move and have its being. The work can then exist, subsist, and persist.
