Most of my work consists of strong vertical elements. For this piece, I wanted to work in a landscape format and create an abstract work based not on a place one could go, but a metaphysical place representing where we are. Cicada Beach is a hot death song longing for sex while burning in the sun. It is about where humanity lays its legacy for future generations. Buried in the sand under the narcissism of our immediate wants versus our concerns of oblivion. I used several large horizontal marks to create this piece utilizing several yellows to create this work, both transparent and opaque, with red violets as a complement to create contrast and form. This is almost entirely applied using a 55" piece of plexiglass attached to a wooden handle to apply the paint, the last mark creating a gooey, textural horizon.
