Portrait of Vash Gon, Indian chief of the Jicarilla tribe, Apache living in the southwestern United States.
Inspired by a period photo by Edward S. Curtis (1904). Work realized with acrylic on linen canvas. The touch is expressionist combined with an almost abstract treatment by the knife work.
Representation of this Indian chief by playing on gender. A woman's face emerges from this man's face and, consequently, no longer designates only one man but encompasses both Apache men and women.
Use of two complementary colors, red and green to create a contrast. The face is treated in a fragmented way, as if, under this stone skin, we could see the raw flesh of this people.
