    Description

Materials: acrylic paint, map of Tokyo (around Komagome station on Yamanote line), hologram sheet, plastic pieces of beach, cement, resin, oil-based pen, cotton cloth, panel

This series expresses an Ark of Life swimming along a time axis, with motifs based on the hierarchical structure of living organisms, from cells to whales (individuals) to maps (society). By adding the material of plastic fragments collected on the beach, the work raises social issues that we are facing today. Specifically, on a map of Tokyo, the largest city in Japan, the artist has re-created a city out of the waste products that have been washed away from the city, cynically expressing the modern society based on mass production and mass disposal. The Buddhist motifs suggest a future of redemption.

As a modern expression respecting traditional Japanese decorations such as mother-of-pearl inlays, holographic sheets reflecting the era of mass production were used for the background. The work is not framed, but a string is attached to the back of the work for wall hanging.

  • About this artist

    Concept

▷ARTIST STATEMENT The theme is nature and life. Adding the knowledge of science that he learned at his previous school to the context of nature worship that the Japanese people have been connected to since ancient times, he seeks to express a bird's-eye view of the magnificent natural world that unfolds inside living organisms and outside of society, which is beyond the reach of the human eye. Specifically, he draws motifs that run through the hierarchy of the natural world, such as cells → whales (individuals) → maps (society), in parallel, and adds a time axis to his expression to create works that visualize the reason and structure of the world. Another characteristic of contemporary nature is that it is changing under the influence of humans. Therefore, in recent years, he has been focusing on the problem of plastic in the oceans and weather changes caused by global warming. Applying the techniques of contemporary art, in which everyday objects and images are used in art, he samples parts from everyday life (contemporary society), art history, biology, and his own history, and connects them together to create a new worldview. He aims to create works that fuse Japanese aesthetic sensibilities derived from a view of nature with Western philosophical elements. He mainly creates semi-3-dimensional two-dimensional works based on acrylic paintings. (2024.9.15)
