    Description

HASHIMOTO materializes the relationship between the time and individuals in this series. He draws his idea “the present time is traceable” as the theme of background painting. The scattered wooden sculptures on it represent the individuals. Together, he implies the uncertain existence of individuals floating on the time which flows away like a river.

The idea comes from his observation of the modern society where the new nonsense words such as neoliberalism, identity, and personality destroy the old communities. On contrary to the words, ironically, the presence of individuals is more diluted the more the words circulate.
He says, “when Tohoku Earthquake (in 2011) happened, what was truly shaken was not the ground but our own identity as people of Japan because we hadn’t defined who or what we, Japanese people, are. I still feel as if the concept of "I" and "we" are wavering inside each individual from the shake.”

  • About this artist

    Concept

The earth is dotted with stalactite caves. These slow-growing stalactites contain hundreds of millions of years of primitive memory. When we see this overwhelming scale of time, we realize how small we are, and that we are just one component of the universe.

My works are also constructed by the accumulation of time in the production process. I put emphasis on the process, and without deciding on a specific motif, I draw, cut, carve, and accumulate time. I want viewers to be aware of the time that exists in my artworks, and to perceive the connection with the universe, just as if they were in a limestone cave. Once we realize that we, as reduced individuals, are one component of the universe, we can understand the importance of diversity and empathy. Empathy" is the boundary between apes and monkeys, and the barometer that makes us human. Empathy is something that is almost trapped in today's bleak and contentious society, and through my work I hope to show how empathy can be revitalized.
