This piece is the crowning masterpiece from the later years of Ogata Kōrin, a prominent painter who flourished in Kyoto from the 17th to 18th centuries during the Edo period. The original artwork, a folding screen, is designated as a National Treasure of Japan alongside Red and White Plum Blossoms, and it is regarded as one of the most iconic masterpieces in Japanese art. Together with the right panel that will be introduced next, this work forms a complete folding screen.
The painting features a striking depiction of a cluster of irises, rendered in vivid shades of ultramarine and verdigris. Kōrin masterfully expresses the rhythmic flow of the irises, thoughtfully considering the contrast with the right panel. Interestingly, many of Kōrin's works, including this one, are notable for their undetermined creation dates.
