This Kyoto Nishijin textile piece features the work of Katsushika Hokusai. Collectors of Hokusai's original artwork can be found all over the world. His iconic piece, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," is widely known as "The Great Wave." In March 2023, it was auctioned at Christie's in New York for nearly 400 million yen. The auction saw six bidders fiercely competing for 13 minutes to win this masterpiece.
"The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is one of the 46 prints from Hokusai's series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, published between 1831 and 1834. Alongside Fine Wind, Clear Morning and Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit, it is one of the most renowned images in the world.
In this print, a towering wave swirls with bold intensity, seemingly on the verge of crashing down upon the small boats below. Hokusai captures this thrilling moment from the unique perspective of those aboard the boats, just inches above the turbulent sea—a signature of Hokusai's imaginative genius. Despite the raging sea, Mount Fuji stands calmly in the distance, majestically unmoved by the chaos.
