This work is an illustration of the myth of the ancient Greek god Pan, who sought mutuality with the nymph Syrinx, who rejected him. The usually cheerful and carefree nymph Syrinx turns into a reed. She lived in Arcadia, served Artemis, and was known for her virginity. Fleeing from the god Pan, who pursued her, she became a reed at the banks of the river Ladon with the help of her sisters, the naiads. It so happened that Pan made from this reed flutes (svirels) of different sizes, put them together and received such an aggregate svirel (set of panpipes), named after the maiden - Syrinx.
