    Description

Barcelona's Sant Antoni market was completed in 1882. This finely decorated structure sells not only fresh food, but also clothing and other daily necessities. On Sundays, the market offers used books (and erotic books), video games, comic books, and movie posters to the most avid collectors.

Restoration work on the building began in 2007. In 2018, it returned to the public in a renewed form.

This painting depicts the building receiving maintenance treatment at the end of 2014, when it was in the midst of construction and briefly released from years of duty. Through the "Market Under Restoration" curtain covering the construction site, details of the building's architect Antoni Rovira i Trias' particular design can be seen.

  • About this artist

    Concept

All works were drawn live on site.

When Takayuki Maejima walks and encounters a sight he likes, he stops there, takes out the paper and marker pen, and draws while standing on the spot.

If he wants to make a strong and clear line, first he draws an outline from the object that caught his eye with a marker pen, and then add a shadow with a pencil.

When he wants to make a soft expression, he may draw only with pencils without using a marker pen, and conversely, he may finish with only a marker pen without using a pencil.

The drawing that he draws while putting himself in that space, standing alone for a while, has the power to convey the atmosphere of the place. He thinks that it can be expressed differently from photography.
