Commissioned book cover for a study of an under-reported and much misunderstood social phenomenon, focussing on an ever-increasing proportion of the Christian population who believe that it is scripturally sound to attempt to achieve mystical union and transcendental rapture through quasi-sacramental means. And although red wine is purportedly the libation of choice – and pivotal to Chadwick Gentleman’s research here - many have found proof spirits to offer a convincing and delightful equivalence, thereby maintaining a kind of conceptual equilibrium. As everyone knows, these inebriant practices have an extensive biblical precedent, as do the desires for numinous immediacy. I like a drink too, and when I reach the sweet spot, mystical states lose their attractiveness. So imbibing makes sense. I can’t find this book anywhere on Amazon, but I’m sure it’s there somewhere.
