This looks to be the essence of the ‘old style’ old school photograph, capturing the vacuity of conformity – people stupidly lined up in uniforms - yet celebrating it all the same, with the hidden truth that institutions of one kind or another are all we have. Yet we are being invited to believe that someone can save us from all this, just by having someone ‘on our side’. Then there’s the question of the ‘call up’: who is calling who, and to what end ? Something about the density of this facelessness tells me that it might well outlast the rest of us.
