Throughout history, women have often been treated with respect and admiration during the courtship phase. However, once they chose their partners, their treatment frequently changed for the worse. This is an ironic reality as being desirable was the only power they held, and once they gave that up, they lost their influence.
Skyler has recreated this moment of transition in a cubist-style painting. In the painting, a woman is depicted with possible suitors within her bosom on the left side, while a successful suitor is shown on the right side in green (for envy?).
The painting captures the tension and tragedy of this individual moment of "conquest." The painting's dimensions further amplify the tragedy. It is a small work, measuring only 10cm by 10cm, in a muscular, somewhat ornate, but tarnished 17cm x 17cm frame.
