Many living things are strongly attracted to light. Why is that?
The sun, the primary light source, is essential to life for many species on our planet. In line with this, Gnosticism, a popular religious movement taking root shortly after the life of Christ, believed there was a divine spark of God that lives within each human being. Accordingly, a core tenet of that belief system was that the purpose of life was to free the Divine Spark from its captivity and reestablish its connection with God. In other words, we were born of light and shall return to light. This time of imagery and language can be found in many places in the Christian Bible.
in the tradition of the art theme "the sacred & the profane" the artist ponders the heavenly and earthly divide and how light is a bridge between the two.
To symbolize this aspect of the human predicament, Skyler depicts an unusual throne—a sophisticated, illuminated Japanese toilet—for his kingdom of heaven. The white and blue toilet and tall, light-filled windows contract with the dark wood and stone surrounding the throne. There are no doors surrounding the throne. We merely need to seek and are comforted by the light, even in our most earthly matters.
