“Some time ago, the artist saw a young man barreling down the street on his bicycle. He was singing at the top of his lungs, and his song was only interrupted briefly when the youngster broke into a wide smile. evidently, overcome by the spirit of the moment, the cyclist was oblivious to what others may think of his behavior. He was united only with speed and his song and no one or nothing else.
In some ways, this is the epitome of youth. He sings without refrainment, but he knows only the first chorus. He makes up for it by singling the refrain over and over again with gusto.
Skyler applies loose and colourful brushstrokes and avoids creating geometric relationships between forms in the piece to suggest the spirit of youth. At the same time, the young man is not the only one on wheels. What do the other people on wheels think of the young man? Indeed, he could be seen as callous or lacking nuance in his enthusiasm. A fool. And yet, as the lovers in the center of the work suggest through their contrast with the older couple on the far left, society needs the enthusiasm of youth, despite its probable folly.
