There are so many sleepy little towns in Japan with nothing much going on. They are separated by mountains, as the country is more than 70% covered with mountains. However, when the sun is treating these towns just right in the early morning or dusk, they can appear unnaturally beautiful despite their ordinary appearance. A photo the artist took while staying at a Japanese inn over a weekend is the base for this matte paper inkjet work accented with heavy brushstroke.
Sherry is not a very common drink in Japan. Still, this piece is entitled "sherry sky over sleepy town" for the alliteration and, as sherry is often a drink before or after dinner, it seemed the best label for a sunset that smooths away the monotony of the day. The high roof in the foreground frames the sky and is a foil to the faraway mountains in the background.
