    Description

    Name of Work:
    A Gesture to Hokusai
Here I make a tribute to one of Japan's greatest artists of all times, Hokusai, and his Ukiyo-e (woodblock printing)- turned-visual-icon, O-Nami, or Great Wave
In this original painting I use ink, pencil, pen and white wash.
I sell this artwork as a limited-series of 7 prints only on fine paper.

  • About this artist

    Concept

Art...the manifestation of ideas and internal visions to actual, concrete creations has been my constant companion throughout life; to be more specific, I have always painted, designed furniture, jewelry and T-shirts, experienced with numerous crafts, created sculptures out of many and varied materials (i have studied marble sculpturing in Pietra-santa, Italy) , and more.
Though my professional life has taken me to the academic world (biological sciences and then Chinese and Japanese philosophy, art and aesthetes), artistic creation has always been an inseparable part of my life, with occasional exhibitions and made-to-order paintings.
My paintings are abstract and constitute an embodiment of ideas that are always a fruit of connections and multidisciplinary thought: Chinese and Japanese philosophy and aesthetics intermingled with natural and physical phenomena- with Nature as my deepest source of inspiration.

I am fascinated with visual patterns in the micro and the macro worlds (I used to spend hours and hours on the electronic microscope to observe the universe that is usually hidden from sight), as they represent particular principles that are at work in the physical universe, e.g., emergent systems and behavior, fractals, complexity in nature, fluid mechanism, self-organization, order and chaos, and more.

I am deeply interested in parallels between characteristics of biological life and modern science and ancient Chinese and Japanese philosophy, aesthetics and art, such as, for instance, a unique awareness to emptiness as the underlying principle of the universe (and the mind), the 'path of least resistance', entropy or the unique affinity and closeness to nature.

My paintings constitute combined techniques of pencil and charcoal, Chinese and Japanese ink calligraphy and brush work, and as medium, I use various types of paper (Japanese washi a favourite) and canvases. My work tends to monochrome but I do use acrylic paints and water colors, as well.
I love experimenting with various materials in my work, such as vinyl adhesive, paper cuts, wood, etc. Some of my works are pluri-disciplinary, that is, that can combine a 2D painting and 3D installation interlinked as one piece of art, or that can be multi-paneled, etc.

My work varies a lot when it comes to size: I paint huge canvases but also small paper drawings; the small paintings and drawings can be sold as prints (larger and cheaper).
Finally, I am a photographer who is, as said, attracted to natural patters and micro-shapes, play of light and shade, and wabi-sabi beauty; As for man-made creations, I am particularly fascinated with Japanese art and aesthetics which I try to capture with my Nikon.
