In ancient China, people had romantic speculations about the origin of the universe: the beginning of chaos and the beginning of the foundation of the universe. Modern physicists speculate that the universe was born from the explosion of a singularity, but there is a similar connection between the two, both moving from the original disorder to order, with a distinction between time and space. Everything slowly became clear and distinct. In such a moment of beginning, there are also the most possibilities. The creation of art is also a bit like "opening up the sky and the earth". For the artist, the idea is created through the form in order to create a universe.
Sculptor Zhao Yongchang dismantled the unique Chinese complex and created a "chivalrous universe" conceived since childhood. Chivalry is a symbol of justice, loyalty, freedom and courage. In Li Bai's "Chivalry", the classic portrayal of a chivalrous man's fast life, "to go away after the deed is done, to hide his body and name", many chivalrous men and women of the past and present have disappeared into the flood of history, leaving their marks only in a corner of history books or in stories passed down by word of mouth.
Zhao Yongchang has been attracted to stories of chivalry since he was a child, so you can imagine that for a young boy, those stories depicted in the jianghu is how much one aspires. Growing up, Zhao Yongchang did not practice martial arts and enter the jianghu, but he was able to present another kind of jianghu through his art, with his sculptural poetry.
His "Chivalrous Man" series starts from the image of a heroic young man, using the language of oriental modeling to speak of that once ethereal ideal. His chivalry is like a flash of light that pierces through the chaos. We can see the vigorous face of Chinese youth today, the responsibility and commitment of what Lu Xun called "getting rid of the cold air and moving upward", with the heart for the country and the world, which is extremely rare.
Chivalry, there will be more dimensions of performance. "Compassion" is also an important meaning of chivalry. Zhao Yongchang has a series of animal-themed works in which animals are given anthropomorphic images, such as a majestic rhinoceros, an armored bull, and a dancing tiger, all of which are his imagination of "heroes". He not only puts his personal heroic feelings into his works, but also intends to inspire young people who may be confused, who are not bound to individuals or to the times, who look up to the stars and see the greatness of the mountains and rivers.
