In the summer of 2016 I moved to California and experienced my first wildfire, the devastation and loss of wildlife had a profound effect on my work.
In the wake of tragedy people band together to begin the healing process, usually ignited by a single cause. Having the insight of an artist, I began to see beauty in the aftermath, when I walked into the burn sites I began to see these organic shapes that inspired me to do something with them.
When a field burns, the affected area is given a boost of necessary nutrients for life to return. I incorporate this concept into my artwork showing how life has the potential to return. Some of them [the wood pieces] speak for themselves, I can look at them and see where they were going. With a lot of them I added hearts or seeds to emphasise that a heart still beats and new life is soon to come. Each burnt or scorched piece of wood from the fire has a history and a story to tell and I want to help that story to be heard. Some of my latest work from the UK is from salvaged wood that is deemed to be too rotten to be usable or is destined for landfill. I want the viewer to connect with each piece and find organic beauty within, ask questions about our treatment of the environment and find hope and optimism for our future.

Glen Farrelly trained at the renowned Camberwell College of Arts in London, studying for a fine arts degree focusing on ceramics. When he graduated his work was immediately accepted into the South London Gallery where his work could be seen alongside those of Gilbert and George, Damian Hirst and Tracy Emin.
Glen then went on to study for a postgraduate degree in education and then went on to teach art at The City of London School. The school, nestled on the bank of the Thames between St Paul’s Cathedral and Tate Modern, is where Glen would spend the next 19 years sharing his skills and honing his own ideas before taking the role as Head of Art. With Tate Modern on his doorstep Glen continued to immerse himself in the artwork of contemporary artists whilst running a forward thinking department.
In 2016 he moved with his young family to LA. Unfortunately, after only 2 months in his new home, the area was under threat by the Sand Fire. The fire was the biggest the city had seen for many years and the first he had ever seen! The fast moving fire came within 1/4 mile of his home causing his family to evacuate for three days. Obviously this had a huge impact on his work. As soon as he was able, he began walking the fire ravaged sites and collected remnants of scorched and discarded wood. Glen concentrates on finding the beauty that remains in each piece of wood and emphasises the new life that emerges. Each piece is carefully sculpted to show the scars left by the fire and the beauty and new life that is returning to the City. Glen moved back to the UK at the start of the pandemic in 2020 where he set up a studio in North Wales. He was invited to exhibit his work in Clerkenwell, London where he is currently lead artist. He continues to work with reclaimed and salvaged wood. Glen has always been an ambassador for environmental issues and hopes his artwork helps to raise further awareness of the effects of climate change. All of Glen’s work is100% recycled and reclaimed.
