He was born in 1973 in Seattle, Washington. He completed his BFA at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and his MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detroit. Peterson's work has been included in major exhibitions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. He has also had solo exhibitions at Albertz Benda in New York, Over the Influence in Los Angeles, Galerie du Jour at Agnès Bé in Paris, Pilevneli in Istanbul, and PLUS-ONE in Antwerp.
