Ernst Höppner was born on January 25, 1905 in Gnoien. In 1910, the parents moved to Dargun with their five-year-old son and four other siblings.
During his school days he had, among other things, drawing lessons with teacher Drenkow. He challenged and encouraged Ernst Höppner's natural talent as early as his childhood.

When his father died early, Ernst and his brother Heinrich traveled through the villages around Dargun with a traveling cinema. After the war, the company was expropriated.
In 1933 Ernst Höppner married his Alice. The marriage produced three children. Erson, Anneliese and Karin.
In 1950 Ernst Höppner founded a company for ice cream production.
With his whole family he moved across the country with the ice cream trade.
Ernst Höppner met Marie Hager, a painter from Dargun who is well known today. At that time she lived in the vicarage across the street in Burgstrasse. Marie Hager broke off her singing studies and switched to painting. She was a student of the German art professor Max Uth, the landscape painter Hans Licht, the landscape and history painter and university teacher Eugen Bracht, and the painter and lithographer
Ernest Kolbe.
This acquaintance with Marie Hager was very important for him, as it aroused his interest in painting. She taught him how to search for motifs in nature. Ernst Höppner also benefited from Marie Hager's knowledge of materials and painting techniques.

The painter Marie Hager and his natural talent were the basis for the hobby that he pursued until his death in 1984.
But without constant self-study, the works shown here would not have been created.
