Concept

Annelies Toebes creates modern frescoes, using the ancient Italian technique to create modern works of art. Most frescoes are large, meant to fill an entire wall, but she also creates small frescoes on tiles. In addition to fresco painting, she also makes collages and gouaches. Sometimes as sketches to use later for a mural, or just to try out new ideas. She is inspired by architectural spaces, strange perspectives and of course color. Her work is mostly abstract but sometimes moves toward more recognizable forms of figurative art. For the collages, she paints the sheets of paper in her beloved colors to create her own palette.

Biography

Annelies Toebes studied at the art academy in Arnhem (Artez) and got her bachelor degree in the direction of liberal arts. She then specialized in the fresco technique in Italy (Il laboratoria per l'affresco di Elena e Leonetto Tintori), with the help of a scholarship from the Italian state. She stayed in Italy for another 7 years. Then she left for Belgium. In Antwerp she worked on all kinds of art education projects for schools, galleries and museums. In 2010 she founded her own fresco company, 'fresco design'. She makes large frescoes on commission. She currently lives and works in the Netherlands.
