Shoun Yamamoto is an abstract painter from Japan. He was born in a seaside town in Hokuriku and grew up in an environment of raging seas and blowing snow sideways in winter. His aesthetic sense is influenced by this landscape. His watercolors depict light and shadow, stillness and upheaval in black and white, and sometimes contain reflections on the universe and life. He paints with sumi ink, white paint, and charcoal, and creates various shades of color by flicking them with wax or removing them with absorbent paper. He has no set theme and begins to paint intuitively what comes out of him, and he completes his work through repeated dialogues with what is painted. He began painting in 2019, and his tumultuous life up to that point exudes from his work. He also began using color in 2024.
