Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum...philosophy of embracing the flaws and imperfections by highlighting them. A metaphor for human existence and healing; damage, cracks, trauma, and breakage are aspects of human life.

When I am painting, Japanese Kintsugi philosophy is heavily used as well as neuroline art theories. I prefer to paint through emotions and most times I am working through a particular emotion, situation, or reflecting on something while I paint. Once the paintings are dry, I use these philosophies and theories to transform whatever experience or emotion I have physically painted. I achieve this transformation by physically ripping them up. I then go back through gluing all of the ripped edges back together and finish by gold foiling these fusions which completes the transformation. In a sense each painting represents the death or healing of something, a transformation, and the rebirth of something new. My paintings are typically abstract and I know what each one stems from for me but I like to leave them up to interpretation for others. That includes orientation of the paintings as well. My hope would be that my paintings act somewhat as tools for reflection and meditation for others to explore their emotions and themselves.

“Neon Gardens”

A step away from my usual Kintsugi style and an experimentation with neons and blotting techniques. Painted to battle seasonal depression and add some bright color explosions to the the cold dark winter months, as I dreamt of spring.

I always wanted to be a painter. I abandoned these dreams due to many internal and external factors. Mainly at the end of high school I felt like my dreams had been shattered by this overwhelming implication that art was not going to lead me to a real job or a real life. Fast forward 14 years... with the onset of a pandemic and sudden large amounts of time to be trapped alone with myself and my thoughts this triggered a massive examination of my life and life in general. I found myself drowning in old hurts and wounds that I didn't even realize were there. With the help of friends, a therapist, and my own exploration of art therapy I managed to make my way through to the surface. A major part of this was returning to my true self and my true passions. What I am presenting here are the results of my healing of painful experiences, emotions, cycles, loves, complexes, and most of all a broken artist's dreams. In a world that doesn't always support us this is my effort to pick up the broken pieces of life and put them back together.
