Horses are my passion !

When i was a young girl, my mother gave me a huge 100 year old farm animals veterinary book,
its pages were old and brown and it was almost falling apart however inside , the illustrations were incredibly detailed with that antique etching style, and so i studied the skeleton and muscles, and then i was given a horse. first a very old slow horse and then a young untrained horse , a mix of French Thoroughbred cross Boreperd , i called her Gypsie Girl and trained her to do tricks and she was fast as the wind,
i spent most of my childhood riding through the dreamy forests of South Africa, a truly fantastic time of my life.

Horses are really famous for thier enchanting movement
so i watched and rode countless miles until i understood it.
In my art and sculpture to this day, i try to not loose that power
but to keep it alive right there on the page
full of QI, like the horse.

May my art find you
kind regards

Well I have done my 10 thousand hours of pen and ink practice.
My Father Leo who was an architect use to loan me his fancy Rotring art pens to learn how to draw.

Oh yes i would break the 0.1 and 0,25 mm hair thin nibs, but eventually i learned to be soft in the pressure and let the ink flow, i still use these pens.
i began drawing from as soon as i could hold a pen
i found it very relaxing and liked the challenge.

As i grew up i started motor biking
and eventually crossed South Africa alone 3 times on different bikes first a 200cc then a KTM 640 cc then a BMW 650cc
the first time i asked my father “Could i do it ? could i drive to Cape town?”
he said " Yes, of course, just take a machete and take the long route through the desert.

Then i moved to England for 4 years and studied at the NCCA
Top media school , studying computer visualisation and 3D animation after being inspired by Studio Ghiblis animated movies.
i couldn’t complete the course , as it was an experimental course to try and merge a programmer with an artist, as the industry was having problems with un-navigable interfaces on apps and software. The artists have since then helped!

There i also studied Kung Fu under Dr Alan Tinnion a inner chamber disciple of the Shaolin Temple , incredible life saving skills that i am so honoured to have been taught.

after that i did a one year private apprenticeship in bronze smithing in South Africa learning the traditional lost wax method, which i really enjoyed after all the virtual sculpture inside the computer. it was not as effective as hands on sculpture.
and i plan to make more bronze art in the future.
it is a exquisite medium that lasts 100 thousand years

i have done a lot of travelling and farming and landscaping

but back to the topic of art and the
most important details are that….

The hands of your artist are well tempered.

kind regards Jessica Shackleton
