With the themes of "time and accumulation" and "existence and memory," the artist Hitoshi Hashimoto creates works using materials such as wood and iron, and has been active not only in Japan but also in Taiwan and New York. In 2014, he completed the master's course at the same department. While still a student, he attracted attention for his participation in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial and the Ataka Prize, and his graduation work, which won the Tokyo Governor's Prize, was installed in Ueno Park in Tokyo until 2014. He has also exhibited his works in numerous domestic and international group exhibitions, and won the Grand Prix at the 2016 "TAGBOAT AWARD" and the Grand Prize at the 2017 "Independent Art Fes TAIPEI", as well as "Chained - In the Chain", "Memory Code", "Memento MORI". He has also devoted himself to holding solo exhibitions such as "Chained - In the Chain", "Memory Code", and "Memento Mori".
Hashimoto's works are the result of the accumulation of time in materials through the use of production methods such as carving and translucent solid wood to the utmost limit, crushing iron pipes, and painting the surface of paper with colored pencils. The process of creation is extremely detailed and meticulous, for example, it takes about three hours to create one wooden cube. For example, it takes about three hours to create a single wooden cube, and then the pieces are put together to form a single work of art. It is truly the crystallization of time.
The wood and iron used as materials circulate the earth and are repeatedly regenerated, and their memories are hidden within them. Works created by careful handwork that spares no time using these materials also contain the memories of the creator's body. By creating works with traces of actions using his own body, Hashimoto obtains a sense that he exists and confirms his existence. These one-of-a-kind works, in which the artist's thoughts and feelings take shape through steady work and the accumulation of time, will resonate deeply in the hearts of viewers and evoke empathy.
