Inspired by the ancestral and fantastic imagery present in the handicrafts of Barcelos' ceramists, such as Rosa Ramalho famous ceramist of the 60’s and 70’s, this project revisits the traditional ceramic bestiaries present in Portuguese folklore and popular art. It seeks to provoke curiosity and fascination, embodying unconscious impulses related to disorder, confusion, absurdity and abnormality that terrify spectators, fundamental characteristic of monsters, allowing them to reflect on what defines something as monstrous, but keeping these entities on the periphery of humanity.

My name is Marco Ferreira, otherwise known as 'Azoriano'. I am a Portuguese artist, originally from the island of São Miguel in the Azorean archipelago. I studied Sculpture at University of Porto, achieving a BA degree and I later obtained a Master's degree in Product Design at the Escola Superior de Artes e Design in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. Having experimented with various media, I was drawn to ceramics because I was fascinated by the unique properties of clay and the effects produced by different glazes. In my current work, I explore themes from mythology and hope to reveal truths about the human condition through a series of monstrous figures.
