The artist's work explores contemporary themes, including social issues such as race, gender and identity. Based on his racial identity and awareness of ancestry, he creates realist paintings that seek to dialogue, today and yesterday, about the various black identity memories; attributing to them values and knowledge that have always been and are used as a mechanism to combat racism and also as a means of visual writing of history, resistance and black existence in the world.

Mário Cruz is a self-taught contemporary artist who specializes in drawing, graffiti and painting and uses a variety of media and techniques to develop his work and themes. Without the ability to incorporate ideas and concepts, art does not exist. My work is always in search of the best way to interpret ideas about blackness in myself and in the world I live in. Inspiration and ideas change. Knowledge also changes. Each of my works is an extension of where we blacks come from and what I have learned in the time lived.
