Concept

Minimalism and Design as Art play a dominant role in Hessler's practice, drawing inspiration from the Modernism movement and in particular the Bauhaus ethos and its emphasis on the integration of art, design and craftsmanship. She is captivated by the clean lines, symmetry, and spatial relationships found in architectural design. Hessler carefully considers the balance and proportions of her sculptures, orchestrating an intricate interplay of forms that evokes a sense of wonder, inviting the viewer into a realm where art, design, and the natural world coexist in harmonious unity. “I love the physical interaction and tactility of working with metal, how it responds to the rhythm of the body. The expression of my movement and state of my mind is all visible and makes each piece unique. More recently I have started to explore combining metal with locally found driftwood, to create an exploration of geometric shapes fused with organic textures. I aim to deepen the viewers' connection to the artwork, inviting them to explore the intricate relationships between materials, movement, balance, and the ever-present textures of nature."

Biography

Anja Hessler (b. 1974) is a German/British artist and designer based in Ramsgate, UK. She creates one-of-a-kind moving sculptures and objects from precious and non-precious metals, acrylic and wood.

Minimalism and Design as Art play a dominant role in her artistic practice. She draws her inspiration from the Modernism movement, particularly the Bauhaus aesthetic and its focus on form and function. Her work explores materials, shapes, textures, balance, light and movement in space.

While studying to become a display artist she was introduced to a wide variety of crafts and design skills, working on theatrical stage-based arrangements with a focus on forms in space and how to engage the viewer. Anja is fascinated by the reflection of light and movement in space, and how it interacts with each object, transforming the aesthetic of a sculpture and its surroundings from a static object to an interactive installation for the viewer.

Her work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions and art fairs in the UK and across Europe and is held in several private collections in the UK, Europe and US.
