Julia da Mota’s practice is based on the fields of painting and printmaking, where she explores the relationships between color, form, and matter to create works that come from a phenomenological approach towards space, as well as from her intimate experiences. Drawing inspiration from Minimalism, Geometric Abstraction and Brutalism in architecture, Da Mota’s body of work addresses the possible links between man-built space, the idea of landscape, and their limits.

Julia da Mota is a Brazilian visual artist living and working in São Paulo. Born in São Paulo in 1988, she completed her Master’s Degree in Visual Arts at the University of São Paulo and earned a B.Arch degree from the University of São Paulo/ENSA-Paris La Villette. In the last years, Da Mota has shown her works in exhibitions throughout Brazil and Europe and participated in various artist residency programs.

Da Mota’s practice is based on the fields of painting and printmaking, where she explores the relationships between color, form, and matter to create works that come from a phenomenological approach towards space, as well as from her intimate experiences. Drawing inspiration from Minimalism, Geometric Abstraction and Brutalism in architecture, Da Mota’s body of work addresses the possible links between man-built space, the idea of landscape, and their limits. In her research, she investigates the tensioning of boundaries– between the external and the internal, the constructed and the void; between passage and permanence, between the public and the intimate.

In 2021 Julia was an artist-in-residence at Pivô, one of Brazil’s most prominent non-profit artist residency programs. In 2019 she was a Project Keyholder at East London Printmakers (UK) and an artist-in-residence at Lava! (Residência foNTE, São Paulo). In 2018 she was part of LAMB Projects’ Billingbear Farm Residency in Berkshire (UK). She has widely shown her work in exhibitions in São Paulo (BR), Ribeirão Preto (BR), Belo Horizonte (BR), Blumenau (BR), London (UK), Alijó (PT) and Chamalières (FR), and has works in collections in Brazil, the United Kingdom, USA, Argentina, Australia, Spain, Portugal, and France.
