Based out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Ravell XIV Robinson creates works of art that challenge perspectives, create conversations, and encourages the use of imagination. Committing to not just one style, Ravell’s work ranges in a variety of mediums and spans in the styles of modern cubism, abstract, and realism.
Ravell’s love for art was instilled in him at an early age. Unable to speak until age 5, he used art as a form of communication. For Ravell, it was much easier to create a visual representation to give voice to his thoughts and feelings than it was to communicate them with words. As he grew older, his artistic skill progressed as well. In 2015, he quickly came to a realization when creating paintings to furnish his new apartment that his work was meant to be shared with the world. He reinvented himself as Ravell XIV, with the symbolic number XIV representing his creative identity, state of mind, and state of being. The hobby turned passion would go on to make a meaningful and beautiful impact for all who view it. Ravell finds inspiration from the greats like Henri Matisse, Frida Kahlo, and Georges Braque, but is most inspired by artists like Pablo Picasso, who Ravell finds many personal parallels, and Jean Michel Basquiat, who shares the same outlook on race in America and the experiences of being a Black painter. Ravell also gathers inspiration through the elements that surround him such as life’s interactions, nature, animals, and how he is feeling in the moment.
Ravell XIV’s artwork is personal and liberated. To him, bringing a work of art into the world is like bringing a child into the world. It is precious and beautiful, a version of himself that he loves and cherishes. Just as a child grows to become self-sufficient and able to fend for itself, his artwork does the same when it grows from being intentionally crafted in the studio to vibrantly resting on gallery or collector’s walls. -Kimberly Braud (2020 Interview)
