Mariko Ohashi uses collage as a method to visualize time, and presents a world of multi-layered images. Ohashi's work, in which multiple lines are drawn as if to imprint the traces of her hands, is not simply a painting as an image, but a gimmick that makes us think about painting as an object or a physical trace, and about the existence of time and our relationship to it. In this age of digitalization and the loss of our physicality, Ohashi's paintings have the power to encourage us to think about matter, painting, and the body.

“Movement”

This is an abstract painting composed of overlapping drawings of lines left over from sometime in the past. The overlapping lines create shapes, and the addition of color creates new landscapes and temperatures that are connected to the viewer's memories and experiences. Each of the lines on the canvas represents a time that existed in the past, and the "Movement" series can be said to be a piece of time that has been preserved within the paintings. Through these works, I would like to show that neither painting nor everyday life appears suddenly, but takes shape little by little over time.

“Plot・Episode”

The artist will process photographs of landscapes and animals taken in places he has visited in the past into line drawings, cut them out, and paint them on the canvas as if they were a collage. The artist hopes to create a new context on the canvas where different views from different time frames, which originally never crossed each other, meet. By interweaving elements such as cartoon-style speech bubbles and panel layouts, I draw with an awareness of creating a canvas that guides the viewer's gaze, evokes associations of images, and allows the viewer to imagine a story based on his or her own memories and experiences.

“Movement-W”

By treating the lines drawn by others as a single moment in time and superimposing them on the canvas, the artist draws lines and lines, people and people, as if weaving them together. This work, in which lines from different people are mixed together, is an extension of the existing Movement series, and is composed of an accumulation of lines with no visible background, such as the intentions or feelings of the artist. The lines are taken from 67 sheets of drawing paper collected at a solo exhibition in Kobe in January 2022.
