Born in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture in 2002, Hosono is currently enrolled in the Oil Painting Department of Tama Art University.
He has consistently drawn cats since his childhood. Using a unique touch based on repeated observation, he creates works that are "120% more cat-like than cats.
He is scheduled to participate in his first overseas art fair at ART TAIPEI in October 2024, and is one of the young artists to watch.

Statement

"arakawa - the way back home" (2024)

Karin Hosono is an artist who paints cats with a unique touch based on repeated observation.

In this exhibition, she will present a new series of works entitled "arakawa," based on the theme of "Arakawa.
Arakawa is a large, unshakable, and secure space for the artist, and a place where she "fills up" herself.
At the same time, it can be said that Arakawa is a universal landscape where each viewer can find a similar landscape in his or her memory.

arakawa - wind (2024)

The background of this work depicts a riverbed overgrown with grass and trees, and a large bridge.
At first glance, the compositions appear to depict scenes around the Arakawa River from a human perspective, but the presence of the cats in the paintings changes this perception completely.
In each work, one cat looks down at the river, while another cat stands still, feeling the wind blowing off the river's surface.

The charm of Hosono's work lies in the exquisite distance between the cats.
While trying to put herself in the cat's shoes, she avoids excessive self-projection and respects the cat's existence as an other.
This sense of distance will make viewers think about their own relationship with others and how they should be.
