9s Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Karin Hosono, titled “Karin Hosono Solo Exhibition - arakawa - Overflowing”, which will be held from September 21 (Sat.) to September 29 (Sun.), 2024.
arakawa - Michiru - (2024)
Born in 2002 in Sagamihara, Kanagawa. Karin Hosono is currently studying oil painting in the Department of Painting at Tama Art University. She has consistently depicted cats since childhood, using a unique touch refined through repeated observation to create works that aim to capture “120% of a cat’s essence, more cat-like than a cat itself.” Hosono is considered one of the most promising young artists to watch, with her first international art fair participation scheduled for ART TAIPEI in October 2024.
Statement
"arakawa - the way back home" (2024)
Karin Hosono is an artist known for her unique touch in depicting cats, based on repeated observations.
In this exhibition, she will present a new series titled “arakawa,” centered around the theme of the Arakawa River. For the artist, Arakawa is a vast, unshakable space filled with a sense of security, a place where she feels “overflowing.” At the same time, the Arakawa is a universal landscape, where viewers might find similar scenes within their own memories.

The backgrounds of her works feature lush riverside vegetation and large bridges. At first glance, the compositions seem to capture the scenery around the Arakawa River from a human perspective, but the presence of the cats depicted in the scenes shifts this perception entirely. In her work, you can see some cats gazing down at the river, while in other pieces, others stand still, quietly feeling the breeze coming off the river.
The allure of Hosono’s work lies in the delicate distance she maintains with the cats. While she attempts to see things from their perspective, she avoids projecting herself excessively onto them, respecting the cats’ existence as others. This nuanced distance encourages viewers to reflect on their relationships with others and their own ways of being.
