Women pour their dignified gazes at us from behind the canvas. In just a few years since her debut, Kamakiriko has attracted the attention of collectors in Japan and abroad, and is an artist who aims to "reconstruct beauty painting.
How is the charm of these women created, and what is the "new beauty painting" that Kamakiriko continues to create? In this article, we will explore the artist's thoughts and feelings that go into her work in an interview conducted at TRiCERA ART.
A sold-out artist who attracts collectors

Began her career as an artist in 2021. A contemporary artist who challenges to "reconstruct the beauty painting".
Only two years after starting his career as an artist, he has exhibited his works at many art fairs overseas, including in Taiwan and Busan. In August 2023, he will participate in a group exhibition at GINZA SIX Artglorieux Gallery, a gallery owned by Daimaru Matsuzakaya, together with Yayoi Kusama and others, and is highly anticipated in the contemporary art world.
He also held a solo exhibition at TRiCERA in the same month"Do girls dream of Electric City? 000000">All seven exhibited works sold out.
How did you get into the art world?
You started creating artworks in the spring of 2021, didn't you? Could you tell us how you got started?
Originally, my family members are active as illustrators. I myself worked as an ordinary company employee for about 10 years before quitting my job and setting up an office with my family. At that time, I started taking on logo design work, and gradually began to draw my own works.
Do your experiences as a designer have anything to do with your current work?
At that time, I was self-taught in design techniques, so I trained myself by looking at a lot of good logos and inputting them into my work. From that experience, I have continued tolook at various things and incorporate them into my style even after I became an artist.
When working digitally, I open Adobe Illustrator and start drawing vector lines (lines that are drawn in digital software by setting the starting and ending points of the lines and the degree of curvature). You do not do any rough drawing with a pencil, but rather create a composition that is nearly complete from the beginning.
Perhaps because of my production method, I often receive feedback that the lines are sharp. These may also be influenced by my experience as a designer.
蟷螂子の目指す「新しい美人画」とは
ー蟷螂子さんのペンネームの由来を教えてください。
強い女性像を描いていきたいと活動当初から考えていたので、「カマキリのメスは交尾中にオスを喰らうことがある」という逸話にならって「蟷螂子」を名乗るようになりました。
ー活動初期から一貫して「強い女性」をメインモチーフに据えられていたのですね。女性を描こうと思ったきっかけは何ですか？
まず、私自身が日本で育つ中で、アイドルやアニメ文化に触れ、「女性が画面の中心にいる」ということに馴染みがあったから、という背景があります。
さらに、脱サラした後、テレビを何となく見ていると、毎日何かしらの事件に遭っている女性の写真が目について、やるせなさを感じてしまって。その頃から女性の外見的な部分だけではなく、内面の強さを描きたいと思って女性を描き始めました。
個人的にも、幼少期から「普通とは違う自分」を意識しながら生きてきたので、マイノリティや弱者が置かれる環境を目にすると色々と考えてしまう部分があります。それもあって、私が描く女性たちにも、女性であること、アジア人であることなど複数のアイデンティティーのレイヤーを持たせています。
ーコンセプトとして「美人画の再構築」を目指されていますが、蟷螂子さんにとっての新しい「美人画」とはどのようなものですか？
個人的に、観客側だけが「見る対象」ではなく、むしろ作品が観客に「こちらを見ている」と思わせるような美人画を描きたいと思って制作しています。
「再構築」の対象としては、女性やマイノリティに向けられがちなバイアスも含まれると考えていて。その上で、彼女/彼らが持つ生命力そのものを描いていきたいですね。
例えば、今年制作した「DARUMA」シリーズは、厳しい顔ですがユーモラスでもあるダルマに、人間の情けなさを託しています。そうした不完全な部分も引き受けて生きる女性を描き、人間自体の生命力の強さを表現しました。
ー活動当初はデジタルで描いた絵をキャンバスに印刷したジークレー作品が多かったと思いますが、2023年ごろからハンドペインティングを取り入れていらっしゃいます。そのきっかけはなんですか？
作品を展示する中で、いろいろな方から「ハンドペイントにも挑戦してみたら？」と声をいただいたこともありますが、より直接的なきっかけはある作家さんと開いた二人展です。
私は当時デジタルプリントの作品を、もう一人の作家さんはハンドペイントの作品を展示していました。会期中、その作家さんの作品をじっくり見ると、「手で描くこと」で表現できる情報の多さを実感したんです。
もちろん、デジタルでもいろいろな表現は可能なんですが、手描きで塗り込まれた絵具は人間らしさというか、ある種の不完全さが魅力になっているんじゃないかと思って。実は、私は作家活動開始と同時期に子どもが産まれて、子どもを世話しつつ絵を描くという生活を送っているんです。その中で、上手くできないことも多いけれど、ニコニコ笑っている子どもと、手描きの魅力が重なって見えたのもあって、今年からはハンドペイントに移行しています。
ー制作方法を変えることで苦労した点はありましたか？
デジタルに比べて、手描き作品ではかなり線を整理しています。手描きで加わる質感などの情報は生かしつつ、よりシンプルなラインで作品が構成できるように、自分の中での造形方法はかなり変えました。
とはいえ、ハンドペイントで制作の幅は広がりましたし、むしろワクワクしている面が大きいですね。8月の個展では、デジタルイラストを印刷したキャンバスにライブペインティングで手描きの筆跡を加えるという試みもしましたし、今後試したいアイディアもたくさんあります。
2023年年末〜年明けにかけての展示に向けて、新シリーズも結実させたいと思っています。
今後も「美人画の再構築」を目指し、様々な素材やモチーフを取り入れた精力的な活動を続けるという蟷螂子。直近では、2023年11月10日から上海にて「A-R-T in the Brain Hole 2023—Shanghai」に出品する予定だという。
また、TRiCERAでも年末〜年明けにかけての展示を準備中。進化し続ける蟷螂子の新しい「美人画」を目にする貴重な機会となる。
