■ Monster Show
This year 2023, Hiroki Takeda has created a new theme, "Four Elephants", an ancient Chinese beast/deity, compared to his previous style.
Concept
Since ancient times, human beings have coexisted peacefully with animals. The art of revering wild animals and utilizing them to enrich our lives has contributed to the development of human society. In many religions around the world, wild animals are sometimes depicted as gods and sometimes as terrifying monsters.
The themes of the exhibition, the Four Gods and the Kirin, are of Chinese origin and have long been revered as the guardians of mankind. The Four Gods refer to the Green Dragon, the White Tiger, the Vermilion Bird, and the Xuanwu, which guard the four directions of east, west, north, and south. The unicorn is added in the center and is called the Five Spirits.
Hiroki Takeda has expressed many fusions of animals and flowers so far. In this exhibition, the five spirits, or kami, are depicted in a unique interpretation that elevates them to art. Considering that the guardian gods protect not only humans but also nature, it can be said that the gods originally coexisted with nature in the garb of nature.
