About the solo exhibition "Divine Beasts
Hiroki Takeda has consistently painted fusions between animals and plants that exist in the real world, such as cats, tigers, and fish.
This time, he takes on a new theme, "Divine Beasts" expressing the great beings that protect nature, including human beings.
In addition, the motifs of the "Five Spirits," such as the blue dragon and the white tiger, are gods that originated in ancient China.
This exhibition can be seen as an effort to situate Takeda's unique world of artwork within the culture that has been nurtured by mankind throughout its long history.
We hope you will visit the exhibition to see the works that mark a milestone in Takeda's career.
In an interview with Hiroki Takeda by TRiCERA ART staff, he talks about his new works currently on display at the exhibition. Please take a moment to read it as well.
Artist Statement
Since ancient times, people have coexisted with beasts. The fear of beasts and the ability to use beasts to enrich our lives has led to the growth of human society.
In many religions around the world, beasts appear sometimes as gods and sometimes as awe-inspiring monsters.
The four gods and the qilin, the subject of this issue, are divine beasts that originated in China and have long been adored by people as protectors of humankind.
The four gods are the Suzaku, the White Tiger, the Blue Dragon, and the Xuanwu, which protect the four directions of east, west, south, north, and west. In addition, a kylin was added to the center of the four, and they came to be known as the Five Spirits.
Until now, Hiroki Takeda has expressed the fusion of many animals with plants and flowers.
In this exhibition, he depicts the Five Spirits, beasts of the gods, in his own unique interpretation, challenging himself to sublimate them as art.
Considering that the guardian deities protect not only mankind but also nature as well, one could say that the gods are essentially clothed in nature."
