In this series, we will introduce young Japanese artists who are currently doing remarkable work.
The second installment is Yuka Numata .
Who is Yuka Numata? Background and Works
Born in Chiba, Japan in 1993, she will study at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 2019 to 2020.
Completed graduate studies at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 2022.
He has exhibited his works at POLA ANNEX, TERRADA Art Complex II, etc. in 2022 and 20 23, respectively.
In 2023, his work will be exhibited at Jordan Brand's first flagship store in Japan, World of Flight Tokyo Shibuya.
The artist captures the sense of discomfort felt by those who lived through the transitional period from analog to digital technology, and reconstructs the way we see things by using iron beads, a three-dimensional technique that has a dot-like feel. The works question and express what is the unchanging analog that still remains amidst the permeation of the digital.

Attractiveness of Yuka Numata
Yuka Numata started to get involved in design and art when she was a high school student and found the au mobile phone "MEDIA SKIN" to be cool.
While thinking that he would like to create such things himself, he started oil painting as a means of expression while searching for the direction he was suited for at an art college preparatory school.
While experimenting with various mediums in college, he came across iron beads.
Currently, seven years have passed since she began creating works using beads, and she feels that they have become quite her own.

Numata discovered his unique style of using iron beads through the above process, and the concept expressed in his works is also inseparably linked to our modern society.
The grains of color created by iron beads resemble low-resolution digital images.
Noticing the similarity, Numata came up with the concept of "mixing digital and analog.
The dots are neither 2D nor 3D. The duality or bi-polarity of such beads led directly to the concept.
This concept has an affinity with the phenomenon known as "malfunction" or "glitch," such as a bug in a game or a gap in an analog conversation, despite the familiarity of digital information and devices.
By giving form to these characteristics peculiar to the modern age through beads, the production is so familiar that we, the viewers, can relate to it.
Market Recognition
In 2022, his graduation project at Tokyo University of the Arts attracted much attention.
He has not increased his issue price since his debut, and is forming a steady career.
Although her beaded works are not uniformly priced according to size, as is the case with canvas works, she is an artist of note whose reputation is expected to grow and prices to rise in the future.

Their works are precisely what Numata focuses on, "between the digital and analog worlds" (Sarah Sze) and disturbing collages of reality and unreality (Katja Novitskova).
Numata's first interest in art, "MEDIA SKIN" by AU, is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and he hopes to eventually become an artist in his own right.
