Yurika Horikawa is a sculptor who creates three-dimensional works based on her unique "occhan" motifs. The oopsies, which appear bright and gentle at first glance, are in fact connected to social problems and painful memories of the artist, which they also heal.
Artist Statement
I value the sense of envelopment.
In my life, there have been many conflicts and events that I have faced, and I hope that once I accept all of these things and sublimate them as art, I can transform them into something bright and transmit them.
Because I experienced the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake when I was a child and have overcome a painful past, I dare to put my feelings into pop expressions.
I would rather express positive feelings than negative ones.
Typical motifs are "ochan," which represents human activities with unisex (no distinction between men and women) characteristics, and "cloud," which represents thoughts and feelings. I work with the historical background of borders and stripes, feeling that it is people who create and change them. "
About the theme of "00
The "00" in the title of the exhibition represents various kinds of boundaries.
The 00 here applies to "human action," "clouds," "existence inherent in people," "inner child," "environment," and so on.
We can say that we are characterized by certain kinds of boundaries, such as the words that fall under 00. But at the same time, it is also ourselves who create boundaries of various kinds.
Perhaps that is why we seem to be so close to each other and yet so far from each other, full of contradictions.
Yurika Horikawa replaces the various boundaries that fill the void of 00 with motifs.
She accepts all of them once, sublimates them, and reconstructs them to become her works.
She says, "I want to know people, and I keep looking for clues to unravel them. In doing so, there is an accompanying sense of the world and myself becoming vaguely outlined."
In the contemporary art market, where such works are prominent, there are works that seem to have a linguistic bias, and works whose essence is masked by their popularity among the masses.
In the contemporary art market, where such works are prominent, Yurika Horikawa's "old man" sculptures remind viewers of a gentle feeling.
They do not embody what can be expressed in words, nor do they rehash past art. Horikawa's practice succeeds in creating solid value through careful observation of his own raw experiences.

"occhan" is a motif that represents "people" activity.
In addition, while taking into consideration the historical background of borders and stripes, I work with the feeling that it is people who create and change them.
Although the background of my work includes negative elements and those stemming from social problems, I sublimate them and continue to transmit as art the brightness and joy that people can glimpse in my work.
I always embody what interests me, what is lost to me, and what exists to turn around the negative feelings that are inherent in me.
