About Honami Shigeta
9s Gallery is pleased to present Honami Shigeta - "intersection" exhibition from March 24, 2023 (Fri) to April 2, 2023 (Sun).
Honami Shigeta is an aquatic creature painter who uses water creatures as motifs to express "the breath of life that she senses from their lives" in her lines.
She uses a particular type of pigment called "Suihi" among the iwa-enogu used in Japanese painting. Suihi pigments are characterized by their beautiful matte colors and are made by mixing pigments with a white powder called gofun.
The unique texture of Shigeta's work is achieved through a complex process of applying layers of paint and then carving the layers of paint.
Artist Statement
The title of this solo exhibition is "intersection.
I feel that I am approaching a point in my life where I have to make a choice about what to do with my life as an artist, as a human being, and as a living creature, and this is the theme of the exhibition.
In the past, I have focused on the theme of the " cycle of life" and "life" ofmarine organisms.
This time, in order to further express the cycle of life, I will present new works that show not only the "sea" where life is born and returns, but also the connection of life beyond the sea to the land and sky, and finally the connection of life returning to the sea.
The word "intersection" means "crossroads," and represents a cycle in which various things cross over and return to the same place.
About the solo exhibition intersection
Shigeta says that it is the artist's role to remind us of what is important.
People today are so busy in their daily lives that it is difficult for them to realize the importance and beauty of life.
Especially if you live in a big city, you are surrounded by a concrete jungle and have little time to spend with nature.
However, nature and life are miraculous, and it is through their circulation that we all live here and now.
Honami Shigeta's works are a reminder of the cycle of life and its role in our lives.

Artist Profile
Honami Shigeta
After graduating from a vocational school, she started weekly serialization as a rookie manga artist. After the serialization ended, she started her career as a painter, mainly exhibiting miniature paintings.
She paints mixed media by applying water-dry paint and carving the layers of paint, using aquatic creatures as motifs to express "the breath of life felt from their lives" on her lines.
