Johnna Slaby Solo Exhibition "The In-Between
9s Gallery by TRiCERA is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Johnna Slaby, "The In-Between" from November 18 (Fri) to November 23 (Wed), 2022.
Johnna Slaby
PainterJohnna Slaby is an artist active in two-dimensional works, mainly abstract. In this exhibition, she will present new works that reflect on her residency abroad in 2022 and the meaning of identity.
The core of the exhibition will be a series of traveling paintings based on the artist's days in Europe and New York, which she visited in the fall of this year.
The works encourage the viewer to look at the "in-between" of life's moments, focusing on the objects, poetry, and colors that lie in the background of everyday life. The new series is a condensed version of her own life and her ongoing search for stories and experiences.
The stories behind the collection suggests the need to search for home and to always embrace the journey while doing so.
Artist Statement
In homage to my background and travels in Japan, my work combines the brush strokes of calligraphy and scattered letters.
Born and raised in Osaka, I found myself at the crossroads of several different cultures. The soakstain technique reminds me of both what I can control and what I cannot. The balance between the two is an ongoing challenge that I try to embrace in my life and in my art."
Painting as "in-between
Johnna Slaby expresses her love, fears, and experiences through her work. For her, creating art gives her the opportunity to engage in necessary dialogue about culture and identity. At the same time, it may also be a way to cherish moments of peace and beauty that come to her unexpectedly.

Artist Profile
Abstract painter from Osaka. Originally, she aspired to be a classical pianist, but at the age of 18, she encountered Urban Sketch and was so moved by the colors of watercolor that her life took a drastic turn. She fell in love with the various styles of life expressed through abstract painting and began using acrylics in 2014. She discovered in abstract painting that there is a source of emotion and conversation that she does not usually feel: the colors, the brushstrokes, the touch, the curiosity that she has never felt before.
To this day, she mainly works with a combination of soak stain technique, calligraphy, and other techniques. He has also experimented with various techniques, such as incorporating used coffee shop grounds into his work, to expand the boundaries of his expression.
In 2020, he moved to the UK by himself. The following year, he will expand his activities to Brooklyn, New York in the U.S., and return to Japan in July 2022. In August of the same year, he experienced the creation of an 11-meter-long wall art piece. He is currently based in Tokyo.
